Education Division

The mission of the Education Division is to provide educational opportunities about natural history and science for the benefit of New Mexico citizens and visitors by connecting where we live and how we live to natural systems and evolving processes.

Programs for Families

Summer/Fall 2008

Prehistoric Preschool
Prehistoric Preschool is a Museum program for 3-5 year-olds and their adult companions to explore natural history topics in a supportive and fun atmosphere. All activities are child-centered, hands-on, and age appropriate. Classes include two hours of crafts, songs, games, puppet shows, investigating specimens from the Museum's collections, Museum visits, and a fun and healthy snack.

Dinosaur Day
A Family Fun Day
Saturday, October 4
1:00 PM in the Atrium
Join us for an afternoon of fun and dig into a variety of dinosaur activities. Explore what separates dinosaurs from other prehistoric reptiles, practice excavation skills, create a pterosaur flyer, color dinosaur masks, compare dinosaur lengths, handle real fossils, and play dinosaur games. Teacher Open House
Wednesday, October 29
5:30 PM-8:00 PM at the Museums on Mountain Road
Free admission for all teachers of any grade level and any subject to the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, Explora, Albuquerque Museum, and Atomic Museum. All exhibit halls open, including special exhibits, from 5:30 to 8:00pm. Free DynaTheater and Planetarium shows at Natural History. Over 50 additional exhibitors of low-cost or no-cost classroom materials available in all four museums. Discounts at all Museum shops plus music, special events, and refreshments. "Trick or Treat" for teachers; bring a bag and fill it with free "goodies." Questions? Call Jayne Aubele, School and Public Programs Coordinator at (505) 841-2840

Tom Sawyer Family Fun Day!
Saturday, November 1
1:00 PM in the Atrium
Explore the natural world of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Join us for dramatic readings by Kathleen Clawson and hands-on activities for the whole family. Organized in collaboration with the Santa Fe Opera as part of the NEA Big Read project. Free with Museum admission. Questions? Coral Reef Family Fun Day!
Saturday, December 6
1:00 PM in the Atrium
Join us and explore the underwater photographs of Idell Conaway during an afternoon of hands-on activities for the whole family. Meet photographer Conaway, play coral reef games, and investigate live and fossil coral specimens. Free with Museum admission. Questions?
