$5 First Friday: Wild Music

Location:
Entire Museum

String music, hands-on activities, and Albuquerque’s Poet Laureate will all be a part of the program at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science’s $5 First Friday scheduled for 5:30-9:00 p.m. on July 7.

“We have these special admission nights to allow more New Mexicans, regardless of their situation, to be able to experience the vast resources this Museum offers,” commented Museum Director, Margie Marino in announcing July’s special admission nights.

“Everything in the Museum is open on our Five Dollar first Friday, July 7, including our new traveling exhibition Wild Music: Songs & Sounds of Life.”

The activities planned for July 7 include an area and supplies for visitors to make their own musical instruments. Then, Albuquerque’s reigning Poet Laureate Manuel Gonzalez will conduct the Bosque Symphony with instruments hand-made by the musicians. Gonzalez represented Albuquerque four times as a member of the ABQ Slam Team at the National Poetry Slam. Manuel teaches workshops on self-expression through poetry in high schools and youth detention centers.  He has also worked with art therapists to help incarcerated young men find an outlet to express themselves.

Musical entertainment will be provided by Mad About Music, the advanced repertoire class and touring group for the UNM String Lab School. These young musicians have toured all over the United States and internationally, most recently to Ireland and the NM Four Corners area, playing folk music from all over the world.

The DynaTheater will be showing its newest film, Space Next, for an additional $5 on the evening of July 7 at 6:00 p.m.  This film is great for children ages 8-18 and families. The journey to reach the stars began with our earliest dreams of flying, and led to landing on the moon and sending a probe to Pluto. But that’s only the beginning.Space Next offers a glimpse into tomorrow, and the possibilities of what is to come by way of private space developments and national space programs. The result is a mesmerizing display of interplanetary excellence sure to inspire a generation of explorers, scientists, and dreamers.

The planetarium will present Fractal Friday on July 7 at the usual times of 6:00, 7:00, 8:00 & 9:00 p.m. with the normal admission of adults $10, seniors $7 & children (3-12) $5. The observatory will be open, weather permitting, starting at 8:00 p.m.

The Nature Works store will be selling musical items and other unique gifts from 5:30-8:00 p.m. on this First Friday. The new Hope Café will be open continuously from 9:00 a.m.-6:30 p.m. that day, so you can enjoy dinner while waiting for the Museum to reopen (only the café entrance will be open from 5:00-5:30 p.m.)
