Wild Music Finale

Location:
Entire Museum

The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science will be filled with musical sounds on the evening of December 8.  Live musicians will perform in the final event associated with the museum’s current exhibition Wild Music: Songs & Sounds of Nature.

Two groups will be sending joyous music throughout the museum.  The Young Musicians Initiative (YMI) will perform at 6 p.m. and de Profundis, an acapella men’s group, will sing at 8 p.m. in the atrium.

The Young Musicians Initiative utilizes music to help strengthen communities, schools and families with goals of keeping kids in school and providing incentives to learn.  De Profundis is celebrating their 24th season of sharing “the warm silken sounds of male voices in harmony.” “We are thrilled to have these wonderful, local ensembles sharing a musical spectrum of sound and helping to up wrap up the Wild Music exhibit” said Deb Novak, the Museum’s Director of Education.  Additional information about both musical groups can be found at youngmusicianinitiative.com and www.depro.org

From 5:30 – 9 p.m., $5 museum admission includes all of the musical performances and access to Wild Music: Songs & Sounds of Nature, a highly interactive exhibition which explores evidence for the biological origins of music.  Through environmental soundscapes, exhibits, and listening experiences, visitors are invited to explore nature’s score and expand their understanding of what makes music.

For a holiday treat, the DynaTheater will be showing the classic movie Polar Express at 6:30 p.m.  When a doubting young boy takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery that shows him that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe.  Tickets sell out quickly, but may be purchased in advance at www.naturalhistoryfoundation.org or in the Nature Works Store that evening if any are still available.  Admission is sold separately for adults $10, seniors (60+) $8, and children (3-12) $6.

The Fractal Foundation will be presenting one special, holiday-themed fractal concert that night at 7 p.m.  Like the First Friday Fractal programs, the planetarium dome will be filled with colorful, moving fractal animations, but this special showing will be an arrangement of any fractal which can be associated with holiday festivities. Separately-sold admission can be purchased on www.brownpapertickets.com or at the museum’s admission desk that night, if available, for adults $10, seniors $7, and children (3-12) $5.

The Museum Observatory will be open to the night sky from 6 – 8 p.m., weather permitting.  The Nature Works store will be selling unique holiday gifts from 5:30 – 8 p.m. on this special Friday. The new Hope Café will be open continuously from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. that day, so you can enjoy dinner while waiting for the museum to reopen (only the café entrance will be open from 5 – 5:30 p.m.)
