Science on a Sphere

A special temporary exhibit courtesy of NASA

March 2 through June 7, 2013
Space Science Wing

This exhibit, created by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is a mesmerizing visualization system that uses computers and video projectors to display planetary data onto a six foot diameter globe suspended from the ceiling. NASA researchers have produced visualizations of other planets, our sun, and Earth environmental processes in ways that are simultaneously intuitive and captivating.

Seen by millions of people all over the world, Science On a Sphere® uses high-speed computers, projectors, and advanced imaging techniques to display data on the outside of a sphere and create the illusion of Earth and other planets, the Sun, a moon, or other celestial bodies hanging in space. Walk up to this amazing sphere and you will see the motions of massive storms, ocean temperatures, tsunamis, and earthquakes; seasons changing; sea ice melting and freezing again; and more.

Free (with museum admission)
