International Observe the Moon Night brings the world together in studying and appreciating our beautiful natural satellite.  Where better to see the moon and other heavenly objects than in clear mountain skies at the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center?

Enjoy a stroll along the Center’s nature trails starting at 5 p.m. while it’s still light outside.  As the sun sets behind the mountains, the Rio Rancho Astronomical Society and museum volunteers will be available at several telescopes studying different aspects of the lunar surface and other objects in the sky.  Museum astronomy educator Dr. Misty Carty will train her telescope on the moon and point out different features on a live display in the visitor center’s amphitheater.  A live broadcast from InOMN will be shown in the Center’s museum, while a loop of educational videos about the moon will be presented in one of the classrooms along with fun lunar activities.

  • This entire event will be held at the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center and NOT at the Museum of Natural History’s main building on Mountain and 18th in Albuquerque.
  • Check the Center’s Facebook page on the day of the event in case there’s a change in plans due to weather: https://www.facebook.com/SMNHC1
  • Bring masks to wear inside the museum and classroom as required by the state health order.
  • Remember to maintain social distancing at all times, especially while waiting to look through telescopes.
